Audiences will recognize James from his eight seasons on NYPD Blue as squad leader “Arthur Fancy”, where he was nominated for two Emmy awards and won the prestigious Peabody award. He was also one of the leads on the acclaimed series Detroit 187. Prior to that, James spent most of his career on Broadway and off-Broadway. He originated the roles of “Paul” in Six Degrees of Separation (Drama Desk nomination, Clarence Derwent award) and won the Obie award for his role in Before It Hits Home at The Public Theatre in New York City. He also starred on the English stage and on Broadway in the three character play Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me and played “Harold Loomis” in the Broadway production of August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. James last appeared on stage in A Soldier’s Play at Second Stage and Lower 9th at the Flea Theater in NYC. James has numerous television credits, most recently memorable arcs on Soundtrack to Netflix, For Life on ABC, Sleepy Hallow, The Good Wife, The Following and Orange is the New Black, and he recently filmed his newest series regular role on Amazon’s pilot Hysteria as well as the native American series Scalped. James has starred in The Deuce, Madam Secretary, Limitless, Chicago PD, Blue Bloods and The Night Shift. James won an Emmy award and a Peabody award for his work in the Showtime movie Edge of America. Other film credits include The Battle of Bunker Hill, Steel City, Truth and Consequences, N.M. and Malcolm X, amongst many others.
